I have a full plate before this month is over.

But first things first. I’ve been using photobucket to host the images on this blog and apparently, I’ve over exceeded my bandwidth. The majority of images were soon replaced with the image below:

Well....aren't we popular?

It sucks and in a panic I started deleting sh*t on photobucket….that is until a simple Google search on how to fix this told me to just chill and wait a month.  The images should come back in a day or two, so I’m told.

Anyways, as far as some current art related news…..

I was about to work on a new series of paintings when I a job opportunity said, “no you’re not.”
While I was walking around Boston and taking reference photos for my, now postponed, “new series,” I got a call from my old boss saying he was producing a new musical at the Oberon this summer and the he’d like me to be the prop master. Basically designing and or fetching things that are going to be used for the show. I don’t know how much I can talk about at this point, but basically I’ve spoken with the director about the theme of the show (it’s a comedy) and I’ve watched the unintentionally hilarious late 70’s movie it’s parodying and all I have to say is I am very much excited/grateful to be a part of this.
I’ve sketched out some things and will be creating one of the props right after this blog.  I’ll have to wait until I get the director’s approval to post images of those on here.

Besides storing its many tiny versions of itself....what are matryoshka dolls for anyways?

A colleague of mine is a singer for the Trinity Church choir and he commissioned me to create these matryoshka dolls for him. I believe it’s supposed to show the choir’s many different  music directors chronologically by portraying them as one director stemming from the previous one. It’s quite funny. Anyways, I didn’t technically create the dolls themselves. They were blank wooden  ready-made matryoshka dolls I bought from amazon (cheap). I basically painted the specific clothes on each dolls. I had suggested (and would have rather preferred) painting the faces on the dolls but the client insisted on just gluing images of their faces instead.

Alright enough of this. I have some props to work on.

I was on my merry way to get my taxes done when Photographer and Improv Asylum Mainstage Alumni, Richie Moriarty, called and asked if I could help with the creation of the new mainstage show’s large stairwell poster. If you’ve never been to the Improv Asylum then you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. Improv Asylum theater  is located underground….of a CVS in the North End to be exact. Anyway, you enter the establishment via a stairwell and in front of you should be a large image of the mainstage actors….that’s the large stairwell poster.  They change it every time there’s a new cast and it’s usually Richie who take the actors’ photographs.

The director of the new show wanted the stairwell poster to look like a large iPhone with the actors looking like app icons. Richie would give me the head shots he took of the cast and I was assigned to make an app out of them.

I took a crash course (Google) in creating iphone app icons using Photoshop and experimented first with a few Improv Asylum images…

…. and when I made apps out the photos Richie gave me. I cut back on the glare so the photos would look clean and clear.

I taylored the iPhone for Improv Asylum and then placed the “cast apps” on it (On a side note, Kirsten’s photo on the bottom right is not one of Richie’s. Kirsten provided the photo herself. I don’t know who took it.).

Once I sent  the stairwell poster for review, the director asked me to make a show poster out of it to replace the one I made last month for the same show.

I wish I thought of this design from the beginning.
